Auto Insurance

If you want to drive anywhere in the state of Kansas, you must have auto insurance. This protects both you and other motorists on the road, as well as pedestrians and property owners, in the event of an accident. You will not be able to register a vehicle in Kansas without this insurance.

What are the minimum auto insurance requirements in Kansas?

  • Bodily injury liability coverage: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability coverage: $25,000
  • Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident

Bodily injury liability insurance covers medical and related expenses to other parties if they are hurt in an accident where you are found to be at fault.

Property damage liability, as you might expect, reimburses property owners if you damage their vehicle, landscaping, fencing, or other belongings when you are at fault in an accident. It does not, however, cover your vehicle (see collision insurance, below).

Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage protects you and your passengers if any of you are injured in an accident where another driver is at fault and yet doesn’t have insurance or has insufficient coverage.

Of course you can add more liability coverage if you desire. We sometimes recommend this if there are young or new drivers in the household.

What other types of auto insurance are there?

You may elect to purchase full-coverage auto insurance. This means adding collision and comprehensive insurance to your liability insurance. Collision and comprehensive coverage may be required if you are financing your vehicle with a third party, but we think they’re a smart choice anyway.

Collision insurance covers repairs or replacement of your vehicle up to a certain amount if it is damaged or lost in an accident where you are at fault. This gets you back on the road quickly if your car isn’t operable. Most drivers appreciate this coverage, so there’s no interruption to their work, school, and family activities.

Comprehensive insurance covers repairs or replacement of your vehicle up to a certain amount if it is stolen, vandalized, or damaged by hail, fire, or natural disasters.
